Day 1
We will meet at Sabiha Gökçen Domestic Terminal at 04:00 in the morning and start our journey with Pegasus Airlines 06:05 flight to Diyarbakır. After completing our check-in procedures, which may vary depending on the flight schedule, we will head to Suriçi with our guide to have a rich and diverse local breakfast. We will have our breakfast, drink our coffee and start our tour with all our energy.
In Diyarbakır, we will visit the Ulucami Mosque, which is one of the first 5 Harem-i Sharifs of the Islamic world, and the city walls, which are the world’s second-longest standing walls, including Mardin Gate, Keçi Burcu, and the 10-eyed bridge over the Tigris River. Then, we will continue to Mardin.
On this day, we will explore Mardin thoroughly and see examples of the local architectural element, Abbara, while visiting the Şehidiye Mosque, the Old Government House, and the Zinciriye Medrese. You will feel like you are in another world during the visits to the Ulu Cami neighborhood, Abbaras, Şehidiye Mosque, and PTT House (Şahtana House). Then, we will see Kasımiye Medrese, one of the masterpieces of Artuklu architecture, and you will be amazed by the view of the Mesopotamian Plain. Afterward, we will visit Kız Meslek Lisesi and Sakıp Sabancı City Museum, and take a break in the shopping district. Our lunch break during the tour will be in the center of Mardin.
After the tour, we will go to our hotel, settle into our rooms, and then have our dinner with Mardin’s local flavors prepared exclusively for us on the magnificent terrace of our hotel overlooking the Mesopotamian Plain.
Day 2
We have our breakfast at the hotel and depart at the time given by our guide towards Hasankeyf, one of the first settlement areas of ancient times. We will witness the sadness of Hasankeyf, which has been given life by the Tigris River for thousands of years but will be submerged by the Ilısu Dam, as we visit the still magnificent Hasankeyf Castle, the secret water tunnel, the minaret of El Rızık Mosque, and the caves. After some free time, we will get back in our vehicle and have a short walk around Midyat, the heart of the Tur Abidin region and one of the most important settlements of the Syriac community, where we will have our lunch. You can find some of the best examples of telkari art, meticulously crafted by Syriac masters over centuries. After the free time given in Midyat, where you may recognize the most beautiful examples of Midyat houses from the Turkish TV series “Sıla”, we will leave for Deyrul Umur (Mor Gabriel) Monastery, a very important religious center nearby. The church houses worship places such as Midyat Prophets, Forty Martyrs, Virgin Mary, and Mor Şamuel. After our visit, we will head to Savur. We will visit Kıllıt Village, which has been revived by the Syriac people’s return project. If possible, we can visit Mor Yuhanna Church in the village. Then we will return to our hotel. After a short break to rest, we will head to a restaurant where we will have our dinner and participate in the traditional Reyhani night entertainment (a type of Turkish folk music and dance event) and enjoy the entertainment of Mardin. We will spend the night at our hotel.
